Today I have a new appreciation for the way copyright claims are handled on this and other sites. Why? Because it protects users from false claims made by talentless haters and those who do not respect freedom of expression. It puts the power squarely in the hands of the copyright holder, which is precisely where it belongs. This is infinitely better than Youtube's pin the tail on the donkey approach to maintaining the content on their website. Don't agree with a vlogger's opinion? Is the content of the video not your taste? Just flag it for copyright infringement and Youtube will delete the video and perhaps the entire channel without ever looking to see if the claim was legit. This happened mere hours ago to a user named katethegreat19, one of the most phenomenally talented musicians I've ever had the pleasure to hear. Not only does she have the voice of an angel, she plays every single instrument in the amazing covers she's been submitting to Youtube for years. She's also composed a respectable number of original songs under the name Erutan. All of her videos should have been protected under fair use, but it didn't matter because Youtube didn't check. She didn't even get a warning or a strike. Her account was just deleted and years of work were lost. Imagine if DA worked like this. Imagine if another user could have your art removed or even have your account deleted because they found the content offensive or because they just didn't like you. Imagine they could do this without ever having to prove that you did anything wrong. I know, it infuriates me as an artist to see anyone's work used without their permission but I realize now that's it's not my place to try to police the internet. The best I can do is try to let the original artist know, and if they don't care, why should I?

Edit: Kate's Youtube account was restored not long after I wrote this. Feel free to check out her work here www.youtube.com/channel/UCrvcz…
